In Mission Beach, just past San Juan Cove, rests a small coffee shop called The Lab. This small espresso bar is just one of six locations owned by the Better Buzz Coffee Roasters company, and what makes this location unique is their specialty pour over bar, where they experiment with different roasts and blends and techniques (hence the name). The pour-over bar is generally open on Saturdays and Sundays, while the rest of the shop is open everyday from 6:30-7:00. However, if you ask nicely (and when the barista isn’t swamped with drink orders), you can probably get one made for you, as I did last Friday. I chose the Malawi roast, and it was very well extracted and had a light earthy tone, with very slight hints at a chocolatey flavor. While the service is friendly, and the beach location is amazing, I was not extremely impressed with their espresso. The cappuccino was made in the traditional Italian style, but the flavor of the espresso was lacking a certain panache that makes a drink really stand out. Altogether, I was glad I went, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for another trip. Try it out for yourself, maybe you’ll have a different experience. And if not, take a walk down the boardwalk, I’m sure you’ll find something that suits your tastes!
